Introducing ‘Money Philosophy’

We talk a lot about how to budget, save, invest—but what about the why?

Welcome to Money Philosophy, a new series from Her Stash where we explore the emotional, cultural, and existential side of money. Think of it as an anthropology of personal finance, a quiet rebellion against the idea that money should only be practical, not personal. Because let’s be honest: our financial decisions aren’t just about numbers—they’re shaped by the lives we’ve lived, the beliefs we hold, the identities we carry, and the futures we imagine for ourselves.

Through candid interviews with women from all walks of life—an au pair navigating American wealth culture on $200 a week, a millionaire software engineer chasing FIRE, a devout Muslim balancing faith and finances—we ask the deeper questions:

Explorations

What worldviews shape your financial decisions?

What role does money really play in your life?

Have your beliefs about money ever changed? If so, why?

And what does it mean to make financial choices that reflect who you really are?

Here’s what you can expect from this series:

This isn’t your average money talk. We’re not here to shame your Starbucks order or force you into a Roth IRA (though we love a good Roth IRA moment). We’re here to understand:

  • Why do we spend?
  • What do we believe?
  • And how does it all fit together?

You’ll find that one woman sees money as freedom, another sees it as responsibility. One never wants to owe anything to anyone. Another sees joy in giving it away. We all grew up with different rules, dreams, and wounds around money—and this series is a space to explore them.

So if you’ve ever asked yourself:

  • Why do I feel guilty spending?
  • Why am I saving so hard if I don’t know what it’s for?
  • Why does talking about money feel so intimate and so awkward at the same time?

Then this series is for you.

Read these stories. Reflect on your own. Share with a friend. Because money is never just money—it’s always something more.
